1.Looking Back
Vocal : !Ngubi
The vocals on the track "Looking Back " are sung by !Ngubi , an 80 year old (he thinks !) Bushman from the Kalahari, Namibia. The Bushmen or ' Khoi-San are , like most ancient tribal peoples, under severe threat of extinction due to removal of land and hunting rights, racial prejudice, and what we in the modern world might call progress. I was fortunate enough to be one of a number of musicians/producers invited to write a track using and interpreting the Bushmen's songs as source material for an album aimed at raising money and awareness of the Bushmen's plight , entitled "Sanscapes.”It was a great privilege and a very moving experience to actually meet !Ngubi and other members of his family when they came to London in May 2002 to perform what are not only centuries old songs, but also their living history. Ironically, in order to survive and retain their 20,000 year old culture, the Bushmen have been forced to join the modern world to draw attention to their plight. On "Looking Back " I have tried to express this by gradually bringing more modern instruments and western rhythms into the track as it builds - perhaps it should have been called " Looking Forward!”
We should all look forward and hope that the Khoi - San of the Kalahari, who are an integral part of the origins of our own human ancestry, survive. If we lose the Khoi -San, we will surely be losing a large part of ourselves. For more information about the bushmen and how to help them please contact WIMSA at www.san.org.za.

I am the leopard
That changed its spots
For stripes
Only to be caged
For a better view
But am rarely seen
In my new home.
